Aramis Classic, as the first of the Aramis colognes has come to be called, has been reformulated over the years since its first release, but the original character of the fragrance remains. The scent is often described as herbal, musky, woodsy, warm, and peppery.

Known as a leather chypre, Aramis cologne contains a masculine type of scent with a leather base that tends to stay longer on the skin. The top notes of the fragrance are herbal with a fresh, bitter scent, combined with cumin, an ancient spice that factors heavily in Indian cuisine. Other top notes include gardenia, green grass, myrrh, thyme, cinnamon, clover, and bergamot, a fragrant citrus common in the Mediterranean and popular in Earl Gray tea. Notable heart, or middle, scents in Aramis include clary sage, cardamom, patchouli, cloves, myrtle, and jasmine. The fragrance is anchored by base notes blended with the leather scent, including amber, coconut, leather, oakmoss, musk, sandalwood, and vetiver, a plant root with an earthy, citrusy fragrance that resembles a woodsier version of lemongrass.
